Commedia dell'arte - roots and routes
Commedia holds many of the roots and much of the grammar of european theatre. The archetype characters and masks are visible in all theatre from Shakespeare to Restoration, melodrama to Vaudeville, from sitcom to farce.
The workshop will unlock the world of commedia and examine the influence, imprint and impact it has on theatre practice and performance.
Expect some improvisation, lazzi building, scenario construction, grommelot, emotional landscape and playing a mask.
Didi Hopkins is a commedia practitioner, actress and director who works with and uses the masks of Ninian Kinnear-Wilson. She collaborated with Richard Bean before he started work on The National Theatre production of 'One Man Two Guvnors' (www.onemantwoguvnors.com) to explain the commedia system and introduce him to the wild and wonderful world of commedia. Didi also wrote programme notes for the production and has run masterclasses alongside the production in the West End and on tour.
