HENRY VI – The War of the Roses
Owen Horsley worked on the epic RSC History Cycle of Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V and is experienced in breaking down the barriers surrounding Shakespeare’s History genre. He will be directing at the RSC in 2020.
This 3-day workshop explores the rarely performed but epic and thrilling History trilogy that covers the reign of Henry VI. This collection of plays is an untapped resource for actors in relation to characters, scenes and speeches. Characters such as Margaret, York, Henry, Cade, Joan and of course the young Richard III are rarely explored by actors even though they are some of the most modern and immediate characters in Shakespeare’s cannon.
This workshop will analyse all of these characters in depth through Shakespeare’s use of verse, language, rhetoric and scene studies.
This will be a practical workshop that will not only improve your knowledge of the History cannon, reveal new characters and scenes for future work but equip you with an approach to classical text that is immediate, useful and fun.
Day 1 – Verse Work, Story overview of the trilogy, close reading and analysis
Day 2 – Character Study – Joan, York, Margaret, Henry VI, Richard
Day 3 – Scene work and piecing together the history
