Time: 10.30 - 17.00

In this brand new 3 day workshop TAG actors work with Director Ed Viney (RSC, Chichester, National Studio) on how to play text that is over four hundred years old so you're really connecting with the audience - not playing against them...

In this unique opportunity we'll look at Shakespeare's four plays of 1599 – Henry V, Julius Caesar, As You Like It and Hamlet – to explore the connections between them.

The workshop aims to release power in performance through an understanding of the historical origins of these plays. We'll discover how his plays were 'not of an age but for all time', how deeply the plays emerged from an engagement with his times, and how a practical approach can deepen confidence and invigorate playing Shakespeare.

Ed Viney - Director

Ed is a freelance Director and former Assistant Director at the RSC - he trained as a Director at the National Theatre. He has directed a number of Shakespeare’s plays including Macbeth, The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night. He is a former Assistant Director at Chichester Festival Theatre and was Resident Director at the National Theatre Studio. His wide-ranging work includes new writing and verbatim theatre.

Ed will be directing his stage adaptation of James Shapiro's book, 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare. It premieres in Bristol before touring Spring 2019.

Please read or re-read the four plays of 1599 (Henry V, Julius Caesar, As You Like It and Hamlet) and bring a short extract (2-3mins) from one of these plays that you would like to work on.
